Shri G.P. Birla was the scion of the well-known Birla family. He managed and expanded the industries established by his renowned father Shri B.M. Birla and as a result of his farsight and business acumen, established a large number of industrial undertakings in India and abroad. The companies founded and nurtured by him include Orient Paper & Industries Ltd. and Hyderabad Industries Ltd. He established engineering, paper and service industries in Nigeria and Kenya in joint ventures with local governments and investors. His positive vision, keen perspective and progressive outlook made him one of the leading entrepreneurs in the country.
Shri G.P. Birla was a philanthropist with a staunch belief that industry was not just a source of wealth but also a means to improve the lives of the community at large.
He was associated with large educational, medical, research and other charitable institutions. In particular, he established the Birla Archaeological and Cultural Research Institute, B.M. Birla Heart Research Centre and Rukmani Birla Modern High School in Jaipur. He established several magnificent temples and Science Museums including the B.M. Birla Science and Technology Centre, Jaipur, the B.M. Birla Planetarium at Jaipur, Hyderabad and Chennai, the Lord Venkateshwara Temple at Hyderabad, Shri Lakshminarayan Temple at Bhopal and Jaipur, and the Archaeological Museums at Hyderabad and Bhopal. He also liberally supported renovations of places of historical, architectural and religious importance with a view to preserve the cultural heritage of the country. Some of the temples he helped renovate include Shri Govind Deoji Temple including Kanak Vrindavan at Jaipur, Kanak Ghati at Jaipur, Kanchi Kamkoti Peetam at Kancheepuram, Shri Vindhyavasini Temple at Mirzapur and Kalighat Temple including the Pond in Kolkata.
In recognition of his outstanding contribution and service to the nation, Shri G.P. Birla was honoured with the “Padma Bhushan” by the Government of India in the year 2006.
Smt. Nirmala Birla was married to Shri Ganga Prasad Birla. She is the mother of Smt. Chandra Lekha Poddar and Shri Chandra Kant Birla. She is very proud of her son, Shri C.K. Birla, who is following in the footsteps of his grandfather and father.
Smt. Birla is a deeply religious lady with a strong philanthropic disposition. In addition to being the inspiration for all industrial and public welfare endeavours of her late husband, she has been directly associated with the functioning and development of various public charitable institutions. Modern High School for Girls in Kolkata functions under her direct supervision. Rukmani Birla Modern High School, Jaipur, a well-known co-ed school was established on her initiative. Both these are recognised as premier institutions in their respective cities.
She supervises the functioning of various temples, museums, libraries and art galleries including those in Jaipur, Hyderabad and Bhopal. G.P. Birla Observatory and Astronomical Research Centre was established in Hyderabad on her initiative. She has also established a trust for funding higher education of needy and meritorious students by giving them financial help.
This is expected to help in developing human resources and empower the youth of the country.

In her last professional association was with Celtel International - Mobile phone service provider in 14 African countries with head office in Amsterdam as a Customer Service Director,, she earned acclaim by initiating Celtel International’s customer service department She help build foundations of the company in Tanzania in the initial stages of setting up the operations and later was posted in Zambia to set up and run the customer service department for five years. In her career spanning over twenty six years, she had the opportunity to be associated with organizations including Celtel International, Tata Teleservices Ltd. J T Mobiles Limited (Now called Airtel), and Madura Coats Ltd. (A division of Coats Viyella Glasgo). She is now the Administrator of G P Birla Center.
